akala

Show translation

The boy ate the bread quickly.

Etymology

From the Proto-Semitic root *ʾkl, meaning "to eat." The same root appears in Hebrew אָכַל (akhal) and Aramaic אֲכַל (akhal), showing the deep shared ancestry across Semitic languages. The root also gives rise to the Arabic noun أَكْل (akl), meaning "food" or "eating."

Cultural note

In Arab culture, eating is a deeply communal and generous act. A host will often insist guests eat more with phrases like "كُل، كُل!" (kul, kul! — "eat, eat!"). Refusing food outright can be seen as impolite, so guests typically taste a little even if not hungry. The verb أَكَلَ appears frequently in everyday speech and in Quranic text, making it one of the most culturally loaded yet grammatically essential verbs a learner will encounter.
