/ʔaˈmala/

Show translation

The student hoped to pass the exam.

Etymology

From the Arabic triliteral root أ-م-ل (ʾ-m-l), which carries the core meaning of hoping and longing. The root is ancient and shared across Semitic languages. The noun أَمَل (amal, "hope") is derived from the same root and appears frequently in Classical Arabic poetry, where hope was a central theme in the ode (qaṣīda) tradition.

Cultural note

أَمَل (amal, "hope") is one of the most beloved Arabic names for girls across the Arab world, from Morocco to the Gulf. This means learners often encounter the root in a personal-name context before meeting it as a verb. Note that the verb أَمَلَ is used in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA); in many spoken dialects (e.g. Egyptian Arabic) يِتمنَّى (yitmanna, "to wish/hope") is more common in casual speech.
