عَقْل

ʿaql

/ʕaql/

Definition

The mind or intellect; the power of thinking and understanding.

Example

يَجِب أَن نَستَخدِمَ عَقلَنا في كُلِّ قَرار.

Show translation

We must use our minds in every decision.

Etymology

From the root ع-ق-ل (ʿ-q-l), meaning "to bind" or "to tether." The original sense was of hobbling a camel to stop it from straying — a vivid metaphor for reason as that which restrains impulse and keeps a person in check. The root is shared across Semitic languages; the concept of reason as a "tether" on human desire became central in classical Islamic philosophy.

Cultural note

In classical Islamic theology and philosophy (kalām and falsafa), العقل (al-ʿaql) was a cornerstone concept debated by thinkers like Al-Ghazali and Ibn Rushd (Averroes). Today it remains an everyday word — calling someone عاقل (ʿāqil, "reasonable") is a sincere compliment, and telling someone اِستَخدِم عَقلَك ("use your mind") is common parental advice. Note: do not confuse with عِقال (ʿiqāl), the cord worn on a keffiyeh — same root, different word.
