The root also gives Arabic مَعْرِفَة (maʿrifa, knowledge/gnosis), عَارِف (ʿārif, one who knows), and the Sufi term مَعْرِفَة referring to mystical knowledge of God.

The root ع-ر-ف is extraordinarily productive in Arabic. مَعْرِفَة (maʿrifa) is the philosophical and Sufi term for deep, intuitive knowledge — distinct from عِلْم (ʿilm), which refers to acquired, systematic knowledge. In grammar, الْمَعْرِفَة (al-maʿrifa) is also the term for a "definite" noun — literally, something "known." Note: عَرَفَ is a false friend with فَهِمَ (fahima, to understand) — knowing a fact is عَرَفَ, but grasping its meaning is فَهِمَ.
