Etymology
From the Arabic root ض-ح-ك (ḍ-ḥ-k), which carries the core meaning of laughter and joy. This root is shared across Semitic languages: compare Aramaic גְּחַךְ (gəḥaḵ) and Hebrew צָחַק (ṣāḥaq, "to laugh"), reflecting a proto-Semitic sound-symbolic root evoking an open, expressive outburst. The root generates a rich word family in Arabic: ضَحِكَة (ḍaḥka, a single laugh), ضَحَّاك (ḍaḥḥāk, one who laughs often), and ضِحْك (ḍiḥk, laughter as a concept).
Cultural note
In Arab culture, laughter (الضَّحِك) is a valued sign of warmth and hospitality among friends and family. However, loud, unrestrained laughter in formal or public settings may be considered impolite in more conservative contexts. The colloquial Egyptian Arabic form ضَحِك (ḍiḥik) is widely understood across the Arab world thanks to Egyptian media. Note that the word is NOT a false friend with the English "deck" — the emphatic ض (ḍad) is one of the most distinctive sounds in Arabic, famously giving rise to the phrase "لُغَة الضَّاد" (lughat al-ḍād), "the language of ḍād," a poetic name for Arabic itself.
