Etymology

From the Arabic root ف-ه-م (f-h-m), which carries the core sense of comprehension and intellect. The same root gives the noun فَهْم (fahm, "understanding") and the adjective فَهِيم (fahīm, "intelligent, perceptive"). The root appears in Classical Arabic texts dating back well over a millennium and is shared across all major Arabic dialects.

Cultural note

فَهِمْت؟ ("Fahimt?" — "Do you understand / Got it?") is one of the most common classroom phrases across the Arab world, used by teachers at every level. In Egyptian Arabic you will often hear "فاهم؟" (fāhim?) as a quick check; in Levantine Arabic "فهمت؟" (fhimt?) is equally ubiquitous. The root also appears in the widely used name فَهْد and the phrase "أَهْلُ الْفَهْمِ" (the people of understanding), a respectful term for scholars.
