Etymology
From the Arabic root ح-ل-م (ḥ-l-m), which carries the dual meaning of "dreaming during sleep" and "forbearance / mature wisdom." The noun حُلْم (ḥulm) means a dream (during sleep), while حِلْم (ḥilm) — same root, different voweling — means patience and clemency. This dual inheritance gives the root a richly layered character in Classical and Modern Arabic.
Cultural note
In Arab poetic tradition, حَلَمَ and its derivatives appear extensively in love poetry (ghazal) and Sufi literature, where dreaming about the beloved or about God is a central motif. Modern Arabic pop music also leans heavily on this word, so learners will encounter it constantly in songs. Note that the present-tense form يَحْلُمُ (yaḥlumu) is the form most commonly heard in speech and lyrics.
