Etymology

From the triconsonantal root ح-ي-و (ḥ-y-w), conveying the idea of living and vitality. Related to the verb حَيِيَ (ḥayiya, "to live") and the adjective حَيّ (ḥayy, "alive"). The root appears across Semitic languages: Hebrew חַיִּים (ḥayyīm, "life"), Aramaic חַיָּא (ḥayyā). In Arabic, the root also gives rise to حَيَوَان (ḥayawān, "animal" — literally "a living thing") and تَحِيَّة (taḥiyya, "greeting" — originally a wish for life).

Cultural note

The word حياة is deeply woven into everyday Arabic speech and culture. The common greeting وَالله حياك (waLlāhi ḥayyāk, "by God, may He give you life") uses the same root. The expression هٰذِهِ هِيَ الحَياة ("this is life") is a widely used resignation phrase, similar to "c'est la vie" in French. The name حياة (Hayat) is also a popular female given name across the Arab world. False friend alert: don't confuse حياة with حَيَاء (ḥayāʾ), which means "shyness" or "modesty" — a different root entirely.
