From the Arabic root ن-و-م (n-w-m), relating to sleep and rest. The root yields the noun نَوْم (nawm, "sleep"), the place noun مَنَام (manām, "place of sleep / dream"), and the active participle نَائِم (nāʾim, "sleeping"). Cognate with Hebrew נוּם (nūm) and Aramaic forms sharing the same Semitic root, all carrying the sense of slumbering or drowsing.

In Arab culture, sleep and rest carry positive connotations and are seen as a gift (نِعْمَة). A common blessing said to someone before they sleep is تَصْبَح عَلى خَيْر (tiṣbaḥ ʿalā khayr — "may you wake to goodness"), to which the reply is وَأَنْتَ مِن أَهْلِهِ ("and may you be among its people"). Note that نَامَ is the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) form and is widely understood, but dialects vary: Egyptian Arabic uses نِمْت (nimt) in the past tense.
