I saw a big star in the sky.
Etymology
From the Proto-Semitic root *r-ʾ-y, relating to sight and perception. The same three-letter root رأي (r-ʾ-y) underlies the noun رَأْي (raʾy, "opinion"), reflecting the semantic shift from physical seeing to mental insight — a pattern found across Semitic languages including Hebrew רָאָה (raʾah) and Aramaic ܚܙܐ (ḥzā).
Cultural note
Arabic has a rich vocabulary around vision and perception. رَأَى covers both physical sight and opinion (رَأْي), so you'll often hear "ما رأيك؟" (mā raʾyuk? — "What do you think/see?"). In Classical Arabic rhetoric, visual metaphors are extremely common, and the verb appears hundreds of times in the Quran in both senses. Be careful not to confuse رَأَى with نَظَرَ (naẓara), which implies a deliberate, sustained gaze, or شَاهَدَ (shāhada), which suggests witnessing or watching.
