Etymology

From the Arabic root س-ع-د (s-ʿ-d), meaning good fortune and prosperity. The root gives rise to a whole family of words connected to luck and happiness, including سَعْد (saʿd, good luck) and السَّعَادَة (al-saʿāda, happiness). The same root appears in the name of the star Sadalsuud (سَعْد السُّعُود), meaning "luckiest of the lucky," used in classical Arabic astronomy.

Cultural note

سَعِيد is also an extremely common Arabic given name for men, reflecting the cultural value placed on happiness and good fortune. When Arabs greet each other on holidays, they often say عِيد سَعِيد (ʿĪd saʿīd), meaning "Happy Eid!" — making this adjective inseparable from festive occasions. Note that سَعِيد refers to inner happiness or gladness, while مَسْرُور is a closer synonym leaning toward being pleased or delighted. English speakers should be careful not to confuse سَعِيد with the verb سَاعَدَ (sāʿada), which means "to help."
