From the Proto-Semitic root *šʾl, meaning "to ask" or "to request." The root س-أ-ل (s-ʾ-l) is shared across Semitic languages — compare Hebrew שָׁאַל (sha'al, "to ask") and Aramaic שְׁאֵל (shə'el). The root also underlies the noun مَسْأَلَة (masʾala, "a question/matter/problem"), widely used in philosophy and Islamic jurisprudence.

In Arabic culture, asking questions is closely tied to the pursuit of knowledge (طَلَب العِلْم, ṭalab al-ʿilm), which is strongly encouraged in Islamic tradition. The verb سَأَلَ also appears in religious contexts — for instance, asking God (اللهَ) for something is a common form of supplication (دُعَاء, duʿāʾ). Note that the noun مَسْأَلَة (masʾala) is common in formal and legal Arabic, while the simpler سُؤَال (suʾāl, "a question") is the everyday noun derived from this same root.
