samāʾ
/sæˈmæːʔ/

Show translation
The sky is blue and beautiful today.
Etymology
From the Proto-Semitic root *š-m-y, related to "high" or "elevated place." The root س-م-و (s-m-w) carries a general sense of height and elevation in Arabic, shared across Semitic languages — compare Hebrew שָׁמַיִם (shamayim, "sky/heavens") and Akkadian *šamû.
Cultural note
In Arabic, سَمَاء carries both the literal sense of "sky" and the sacred sense of "heaven" (also السَّمَاوَات, the heavens), making it a word of everyday beauty and deep spiritual resonance. The Quran uses it extensively in both senses. Note also that Arabic weather conversation — a universal icebreaker — nearly always involves سَمَاء, making it practical from day one.
