Etymology
From the root ص-و-ت (ṣ-w-t), a root dedicated entirely to the concept of sound and vocalization in Semitic languages. Cognates appear in other Semitic branches, and the root is productive in Arabic: صَوَّتَ (to make a sound), تَصْوِيت (voting, lit. "sounding out"), and أَصْوَات (phonemes/sounds in linguistics).
Cultural note
In Classical Arabic poetic tradition, the human voice (صَوْت) was prized as a marker of identity and emotion — poets were often described by the beauty of their recitation voice. The word also carries a civic meaning in Modern Standard Arabic: صَوْت means a "vote" (casting one's voice), so you'll hear it frequently during elections. Don't confuse صَوْت (sound/voice/vote) with صَمْت (silence) — near-opposites that differ by just one letter.
