Etymology

From Classical Arabic شَمْس (šams), shared across all Semitic languages — cf. Hebrew שֶׁמֶשׁ (shemesh) and Akkadian *šamšu*. The root is ancient and likely traces back to Proto-Semitic *šamš-*, meaning "sun." Interestingly, الشَّمْس (al-shams) is a "solar" definite article word — the ل of the article assimilates to the ش, so it is pronounced *ash-shams*, not *al-shams*.

Cultural note

In Arabic, الشَّمْس (al-shams) is grammatically **feminine**, which is common in Semitic languages and many cultures that personify the sun as female. It is a "solar letter" (حَرْف شَمْسِيّ) word — a grammatical category in Arabic named after this very word because the ش causes the ل in the definite article to assimilate. The word also appears in the popular girl's name شَمْس or شَمْسَة (Shamsa), meaning "little sun," widespread across the Arab world and Gulf region.
