Show translation

Thank you very much for helping me.

Etymology

From the Arabic root ش-ك-ر (sh-k-r), conveying the idea of recognising and acknowledging a benefit received. The root is shared across Semitic languages; the concept of "shukr" also carries deep theological weight in Islam, where gratitude to God is a spiritual virtue. The word entered many languages as a loanword — Turkish "şükür", Swahili "asante" derives from a parallel Bantu form, and "shukran" is instantly recognised from Morocco to the Gulf.

Cultural note

شُكْرًا is universally understood across all Arabic-speaking countries, making it one of the safest and most useful words a learner can know. A common intensified form is شُكْرًا جَزِيلًا ("many thanks"). In some dialects, especially Levantine, you may also hear يَسْلَمُو or مَشْكُور as equivalent expressions of thanks — but شُكْرًا works everywhere. Note: in formal or religious contexts, الحمد لله ("praise be to God") can function as a grateful response rather than a direct thank-you.
