Etymology
From Middle High German *vürschlahen*, a compound of *vor-* ("fore-, in front") + *schlagen* ("to strike, beat"). The sense evolved from physically "striking forward" to figuratively "putting forward" an idea — paralleling English *pro-pose* (Latin *ponere*, "to place before").
Cultural note
Germans often use *vorschlagen* in both formal meetings (*Ich schlage vor…*) and casual conversation. Note the separable prefix: in main clauses the *vor-* splits off and moves to the end — *Ich schlage … vor* — a pattern that trips up many learners. Don't confuse with *empfehlen* (to recommend based on personal experience); *vorschlagen* is more neutral and agenda-setting.
