Show translation

The smell of fresh coffee lingered in the kitchen all morning.

Etymology

From Middle English *lengeren*, a frequentative form of *lengen* ("to prolong, tarry"), from Old English *lengan* ("to lengthen, delay"), derived from *lang* ("long"). The -er suffix gives it a sense of repeated or continuous action β€” fitting for a word about things that just won't go away.

Cultural note

*Linger* carries a gentle, often poetic quality in English and is common in both everyday speech and literature. It frequently describes sensory aftereffects β€” smells, tastes, music β€” and emotional residue like doubt or grief. Note that it is not interchangeable with *stay* when there is a sense of reluctant or unplanned prolonging: you *stay* at a party on purpose, but you *linger* when you can't quite bring yourself to leave.
