From Middle English *menden*, a shortening of *amenden* ("to amend, correct"), itself from Old French *amender*, from Latin *emendare* ("to correct, free from fault") β built on *ex-* (out) + *mendum* (fault, defect). The word drifted from moral correction to physical repair during the 13thβ14th centuries.
Cultural note
The phrase **"on the mend"** is a widely used English idiom meaning someone is recovering from illness β "She's finally on the mend after the flu." It's equally common in British and American English. Note also "mend fences," meaning to repair a damaged relationship, which originates from the literal act of fixing boundary fences between neighbouring farms.
