Spanish Level 1 noun

agua

/ˈa.ɣwa/

Definition

The clear liquid that falls as rain, fills rivers and oceans, and is essential for life.

Show translation

I need a glass of cold water, please.

Etymology

From Latin *aqua* ("water"), inherited directly into Spanish. The same root flows into English words like *aquarium*, *aquatic*, and *aqueduct*, as well as Spanish *aguacate* (avocado, literally "water-pear" in Nahuatl blend) and the place name *Aguascalientes* ("hot waters").

Cultural note

In many Spanish-speaking countries, asking for *agua* at a restaurant gets you still (flat) water by default; you may need to specify *agua con gas* (sparkling) if you prefer it. In Mexico, *agua de sabor* or *agua fresca* refers to a popular chilled fruit drink — not plain water at all — so context matters! The proverb *"agua que no has de beber, déjala correr"* ("water you won't drink, let it flow") advises not to meddle in what doesn't concern you.
