Spanish Level 1 verb

ayudar

/a.ʝuˈðar/

Definition

To give support or assistance to someone so they can do something more easily.

Example

Mi hermana me ayuda con la tarea cada tarde.

Show translation

My sister helps me with homework every afternoon.

Etymology

From Latin *adiutāre*, a frequentative form of *adiuvāre* ("to assist"), composed of *ad-* ("toward") + *iuvāre* ("to help, to please"). The same Latin root gives English "adjutant" (a military assistant) and "coadjutor."

Cultural note

In Spanish-speaking cultures, offering help — especially to neighbors, family, or strangers in need — is closely tied to the value of *solidaridad* (solidarity). The phrase *¿En qué te puedo ayudar?* ("How can I help you?") is a warm, everyday greeting in shops and homes alike. Note for English speakers: *ayudar* is not a false friend, but beginners sometimes confuse it with *apoyar* ("to support/back"), which carries more of an emotional or political sense.
