Spanish Level 1 noun

ciudad

/θjuˈðað/

Definition

A large and important town where many people live and work.

Example

Me encanta caminar por la ciudad al anochecer.

Show translation

I love walking through the city at nightfall.

Etymology

From Latin *civitas* (genitive *civitatis*), meaning "body of citizens" or "community," derived from *civis* ("citizen"). In classical Latin, *civitas* referred to the rights and status of citizenship before shifting to denote the physical city itself — the same root gives English "civil," "civic," and "civilization."

Cultural note

In Spanish-speaking cultures, *la ciudad* is often contrasted with *el pueblo* (hometown or village), which carries deep emotional weight. Many Latin Americans maintain a strong identity tied to their *pueblo* even after moving to a major city. Note that in Spain, *ciudad* is pronounced with the interdental /θ/ sound ("th" as in "think"), while in Latin America it sounds closer to /s/ — both are correct.
