Show translation
The grape harvest was very good this year.
Etymology
From Old Spanish *coger* ("to gather, pick"), derived from Latin *colligere* ("to collect, gather together"). The suffix *-echa* is a nominal form indicating the result or product of an action, giving the sense of "that which has been gathered."
Cultural note
Harvest festivals (*fiestas de la cosecha*) are deeply rooted in Spanish and Latin American culture. In Spain's La Rioja and Jerez regions, the *vendimia* (grape harvest) is celebrated with large festivals each autumn. In Mexico and other Latin American countries, the word carries a strong figurative weight — *"recoger la cosecha de tus esfuerzos"* (to reap the harvest of your efforts) is a common idiomatic expression. Note that *cosecha* is NOT a false friend with English "cache" — they are unrelated.
