Spanish Level 2 noun

esquina

/esˈki.na/

Definition

The point or place where two streets, walls, or edges meet; a corner.

Example

Te espero en la esquina de la calle principal.

Show translation

I'll wait for you on the corner of the main street.

Etymology

From Old Spanish *esquina*, borrowed from a Germanic source akin to Old High German *skina* ("shin, splinter, edge"), related to the Proto-Germanic root *\*skinō*. The same root gives English "shin." It entered Castilian through contact with Frankish or Visigothic peoples during the early medieval period.

Cultural note

In Spanish-speaking cities, the *esquina* is a classic meeting point β€” directions and social plans alike are routinely anchored to corners rather than street addresses. In Mexico and the Caribbean, the phrase *en la esquina* can also carry an informal social connotation of a neighborhood hangout spot. Note the false friend risk with English "casino" β€” no connection there!
