Spanish Level 3 verb

lograr

/loˈɣɾaɾ/

Definition

To manage to do something or to achieve a goal after effort.

Example

Por fin logré terminar el proyecto a tiempo.

Show translation

I finally managed to finish the project on time.

Etymology

From Old Spanish *lograr*, derived from Latin *lucrāre* ("to gain, to profit"), from *lucrum* ("gain, profit"). Over time the meaning shifted from financial gain to the broader sense of achieving any desired outcome.

Cultural note

*Lograr* is the everyday workhorse for "to achieve" or "to manage to" in Spanish. Don't confuse it with *conseguir*, which is nearly synonymous but slightly more focused on obtaining a concrete object or result; *lograr* tends to emphasise the effort and success involved. Also note: *logro* (the noun form, "achievement") is what you'll see on video game achievement screens and CVs across the Spanish-speaking world.
