Definition
The part of the body at the end of the arm, used for touching, holding, and doing things.
Example
Ella tomó mi mano y sonrió.
Show translation
She took my hand and smiled.
Etymology
From Latin *manus* ("hand"), also the root of English words like "manual," "manufacture," and "manuscript" — all things done by hand.
Cultural note
In Spanish-speaking cultures, physical greetings are common — a handshake (*darse la mano*) for formal meetings, or a kiss on the cheek among friends. The phrase *¡Manos a la obra!* ("Hands to work!" / "Let's get to it!") is a popular rallying cry. Note also that *mano* is feminine (*la mano*), despite ending in -o — a classic false-pattern trap for learners.
