Show translation
A yellow butterfly was resting on the flower.
Etymology
From Spanish *mariposa*, a compound of *María* (Mary) and *posa* (rests), from the phrase *María, pósate* ("Mary, alight!") — a folk expression possibly addressed to the Virgin Mary. The word has been used in its current form since at least the 16th century. It is one of the most distinctive and poetic words for "butterfly" in any Romance language, with no direct Latin ancestor (*papilio* was the classical Latin term).
Cultural note
In Latin American cultures, butterflies — especially yellow ones — carry rich symbolic weight. In Gabriel García Márquez's *Cien años de soledad*, yellow butterflies appear wherever the character Mauricio Babilonia goes, becoming one of the novel's most iconic images. In Mexican tradition, monarch butterflies (*mariposa monarca*) that arrive each autumn are believed to carry the souls of the dead returning for Día de los Muertos.
