A feeling of deep satisfaction and respect for yourself or someone you care about because of something good that has been done or achieved.

Show translation

I feel great pride in my son's work.

Etymology

From Old Spanish *orgull*, borrowed from Occitan *orgolh* or Catalan *orgull*, ultimately from a Germanic root akin to Old High German *urgol* ("distinguished, prominent"). The word entered Iberian Romance during the medieval period via the troubadour cultural influence of southern France.

Cultural note

In Spanish-speaking cultures, *orgullo* carries both positive and cautionary weight. On one hand it is celebrated — parents speak with *orgullo* of their children's achievements, and the phrase *¡Qué orgullo!* ("What pride!") is a warm, common compliment. On the other hand, excessive pride is warned against in the proverb *"El orgullo es el primero de los pecados capitales"* (Pride is the first of the deadly sins). Notably, *Orgullo* is also the standard Spanish term for LGBTQ+ Pride (e.g., *el Orgullo de Madrid*), one of Europe's largest Pride celebrations held every June.
