Show translation
The bridge over the river is very old.
Etymology
From Latin *pontem* (accusative of *pons*, "bridge"), which also gave rise to English "pontoon" and the Italian *ponte*. The Latin root is linked to the Proto-Indo-European *pent-* ("path, way"), connecting it to the idea of finding a passage across an obstacle.
Cultural note
In Spain, *puente* has a beloved colloquial meaning: a long weekend created when a public holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday, prompting people to "bridge" (*hacer puente*) the gap to the weekend by taking Friday or Monday off as well. Saying "este mes hay puente" is cause for celebration in any Spanish office. In Latin America the same concept exists but is sometimes called *fin de semana largo* instead.
