Definition
A gift given to someone, often to show affection or celebrate an occasion.
Example
Le compré un regalo a mi madre por su cumpleaños.
Show translation
I bought my mother a gift for her birthday.
Etymology
From the verb *regalar* ("to give, to delight"), itself from Italian *regalare*, derived from Latin *regalis* ("royal, worthy of a king"). The sense shifted from "treating someone royally" to "giving something as a token of esteem."
Cultural note
In Spanish-speaking cultures, giving *regalos* is central to many celebrations — birthdays, Christmas (*Navidad*), Three Kings' Day (*Día de Reyes* on January 6th), and name days (*santos*). In many Latin American countries, *Día de Reyes* is actually more gift-focused for children than Christmas Day itself.
