Spanish Level 2 noun

sabor

/saˈboɾ/

Definition

The taste or flavor of food or drink; also used to describe a distinctive quality or character of something.

Example

Este café tiene un sabor muy fuerte y amargo.

Show translation

This coffee has a very strong and bitter flavor.

Etymology

From Latin *sapor* ("taste, flavor"), derived from the verb *sapere* ("to taste, to know"). The same Latin root gave English "savory" and "sapient" (wise — one who "tastes" or perceives). The shift from Latin *p* to Spanish *b/v* is a regular sound change in the evolution of Vulgar Latin into Ibero-Romance.

Cultural note

In Spanish, *sabor* extends well beyond the literal taste of food — it can describe the *sabor* of a neighborhood, a piece of music, or a person's personality, implying a distinctive, rich character. The phrase *a sabor* (to one's liking) appears in older literary texts. Notably, "sabor" is also a false friend trap for Portuguese learners: Portuguese *sabor* shares the same meaning, but this convergence is a genuine cognate, not a false friend.
