sombra
/ˈsom.bɾa/
Definition
The dark shape made when an object blocks light; also the cool, shaded area away from direct sunlight.
Example
Los niños jugaban a la sombra del árbol grande.
Show translation
The children played in the shade of the big tree.
Etymology
From Latin *umbra* ("shadow, shade"), with the prefix *sub-* ("under") producing Late Latin *subumbra*, later contracted to *sombra* in Ibero-Romance. The Latin root also gave English "umbrella" (via Italian *ombrella*, a little shade).
Cultural note
In Spain and Latin America, seeking "la sombra" during the midday heat is a deeply ingrained habit — park benches, café terraces, and even bullfighting arena seats are priced and chosen based on whether they are "sol" (sun) or "sombra" (shade). Saying someone is "buena sombra" (good shadow) means they bring good luck or pleasant company, while "mala sombra" marks someone as a jinx or an unpleasant person — a vivid metaphorical extension rarely found in other European languages.
