Spanish Level 2 adjective

tranquilo

/tɾaŋˈki.lo/

Definition

Calm, peaceful, or quiet; not worried or disturbed.

Example

El lago estaba tranquilo al amanecer.

Show translation

The lake was calm at dawn.

Etymology

From Latin *tranquillus* ("still, calm, undisturbed"), likely a compound of *trans-* ("across, beyond") and a root related to *quies* ("rest, quiet"). The word passed unchanged in form into Spanish, keeping both its literal sense (a still sea or landscape) and its psychological sense (a composed mind).

Cultural note

In everyday Spanish speech, *¡Tranquilo/a!* functions as a one-word reassurance — roughly "Relax!" or "Don't worry about it!" — and is far more common than its English equivalents in casual conversation. It also appears in the fixed phrase *tranquilo/a como una balsa de aceite* ("as calm as a pool of oil"), used to describe eerie or striking stillness. False-friend alert: English "tranquil" exists but sounds literary; Spanish *tranquilo* is completely everyday and colloquial.
