aider

/e.de/

Definition

To help or assist someone with a task or problem.

Example

Elle aide son frère à faire ses devoirs chaque soir.

Show translation

She helps her brother do his homework every evening.

Etymology

From Latin *adiutare*, a frequentative form of *adiuvare* ("to assist"), combining *ad-* ("toward") and *iuvare* ("to help, to please"). The root *iuvare* also gives English "adjutant" (a military assistant). The word has been in continuous use in French since the 11th century.

Cultural note

*Aider* is the go-to, neutral everyday verb for "to help" in all French-speaking regions. Be careful not to confuse it with the noun *aide* (f.) meaning "help" or "aid" β€” they look nearly identical. A common phrase is *"Tu peux m'aider ?"* ("Can you help me?"), essential for any traveller. In formal or administrative French, you may also encounter *apporter son aide* ("to lend one's assistance").
