She decided to go and live abroad.
Etymology
From Latin *decidere*, meaning "to cut off" or "to settle," composed of *de-* (off, away) + *caedere* (to cut). The metaphor is of cutting away uncertainty — once you "cut off" the alternatives, the matter is settled. The same root gives English "decide" and "decision."
Cultural note
French speakers often use *décider de + infinitive* ("décider de faire quelque chose") where English uses "decide to do something." The reflexive form *se décider* adds a nuance of finally making up one's mind after hesitation — *Il s'est enfin décidé* roughly means "He finally made up his mind," implying some inner struggle. Note that *décidément* (decidedly, really) is a common adverb used to express exasperation or resigned acceptance: *Décidément, il pleut toujours ici!* ("It really always rains here!").
