French Level 1 adverb

encore

/ɑ̃.kɔʁ/

Definition

Used to say that something is happening again, or that a situation is continuing. It can also mean "more" or "even" depending on context.

Example

Tu veux encore du café ce matin ?

Show translation

Do you want more coffee this morning?

Etymology

From Old French *ancor*, derived from Latin *hanc horam* ("at this hour / until now"). The phrase evolved into a single adverb expressing continuation or repetition — the sense of "still being at this moment" naturally extended to "again" and "more."

Cultural note

English speakers should note that French *encore* does NOT mean "an encore performance" the way English borrowed the word. In a French concert hall, audiences shout *"bis!"* to demand another song — not *encore*. Using *encore* at a French concert as a demand would sound grammatically odd. The English theatrical borrowing is actually a French word repurposed abroad.
