French Level 2 verb

essayer

/e.se.je/

Definition

To attempt to do something, or to test whether something works or fits.

Example

Elle essaie une nouvelle recette ce soir.

Show translation

She is trying a new recipe tonight.

Etymology

From Old French *essaier*, derived from Late Latin *exagiare* ("to weigh, test"), itself from Latin *exagium* ("a weighing"). The same Latin root gives English the word *essay* — originally meaning "an attempt or trial" before it narrowed to its written-composition sense.

Cultural note

In French shops and clothing stores, you'll often hear *"Vous voulez l'essayer ?"* ("Would you like to try it on?"). The verb covers both "to try on" clothes and "to try/attempt" an action — context makes the meaning clear. Don't confuse it with *tester*, which is more technical and product-oriented.
