expliquer
/ɛk.spli.ke/
Definition
To make something clear or easy to understand by describing it in detail.
Example
Le professeur explique la leçon aux élèves.
Show translation
The teacher explains the lesson to the students.
Etymology
From Latin *explicare*, meaning "to unfold" or "to spread out flat" — composed of *ex-* (out) and *plicare* (to fold). The idea is of unfolding something complex so it lies flat and visible. The same root gives English "explicit" and "explicate".
Cultural note
In French academic and professional culture, being able to *expliquer* clearly is highly valued — France's education system places strong emphasis on structured argumentation and clarity of reasoning (the famous *clarté française*). You'll also hear the reflexive *s'expliquer* meaning "to explain oneself" or, colloquially, "to have it out" with someone: *On va s'expliquer !* ("We're going to have a talk / sort this out!").
