/fɛʁ.me/

Definition

To close or shut something, such as a door, window, or shop.

Show translation

Don't forget to close the door when you leave.

Etymology

From Old French *fermer*, from Latin *firmāre* ("to make firm, to fasten, to secure"), derived from *firmus* ("firm, strong"). The sense shifted in French from "to make fast/secure" to "to close." The Latin root also gives English "firm" and "affirm."

Cultural note

In France, shop signs often read *Fermé* (closed) or *Ouvert* (open). A common phrase you'll hear is *C'est fermé le lundi* — "It's closed on Mondays" — as many small businesses, restaurants, and museums in France traditionally close on Mondays. False friend alert: English "firm" shares the Latin root but has a completely different meaning today.
