manger
/mɑ̃.ʒe/

Show translation
We eat together every evening as a family.
Etymology
From Latin *manducare* ("to chew, to eat"), derived from *mandere* ("to chew"). The same Latin root gives English "munch" (via Germanic borrowing) and the Spanish *manducar*. The soft-g spelling (with an -e- before -ons: *mangeons*) is a telling remnant of Old French orthographic conventions that preserved the soft /ʒ/ sound.
Cultural note
In France, *manger* is far more than fuel — it is a social ritual. The French typically sit down for two structured meals a day (lunch and dinner), and eating on the go is still frowned upon in many regions. The phrase *bon appétit* is said before every meal as a near-sacred social courtesy. UNESCO even recognized the *repas gastronomique des Français* (French gastronomic meal) as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010.
