French Level 2 verb

montrer

/mɔ̃.tʁe/

Definition

To show something to someone, or to point something out so others can see it.

Example

Elle montre ses photos à toute la famille.

Show translation

She shows her photos to the whole family.

Etymology

From Old French *monstrer*, from Latin *monstrare* ("to show, point out"), itself from *monstrum* ("omen, portent") — the original sense was to point out a sign or wonder. The same Latin root gives English "demonstrate" and "monster" (something pointed to as an omen).

Cultural note

In French, *montrer* is often paired with reflexive constructions: *se montrer courageux* means "to show oneself to be brave" — a common and elegant way to describe how someone reveals their character through behavior. Don't confuse it with *démontrer*, which implies a more formal or logical proof.
