French Level 3 verb

proposer

/pʁɔ.po.ze/

Definition

To suggest or offer something to someone for them to consider or accept.

Example

Il propose une nouvelle idée à son équipe.

Show translation

He suggests a new idea to his team.

Etymology

From Latin *proposere*, a variant of *proponere* ("to put forward"), from *pro-* ("forward, in front") + *ponere* ("to place"). Entered Old French as *proposer* in the 13th century, blending Latin *pro-* with Old French *poser* ("to place, to pose").

Cultural note

In French professional and social culture, *proposer* is the standard, polite verb for making suggestions — far more common and less forward-sounding than *imposer* (to impose). You'll hear it constantly in meetings (*Je vous propose de commencer*) and social invitations (*Je te propose qu'on se retrouve ce soir*). Don't confuse it with English "to propose" in the romantic sense — for a marriage proposal, French speakers more specifically say *faire sa demande* or *demander en mariage*.
