French Level 2 verb

réussir

/ʁe.y.siʁ/

Definition

To succeed at something or to do something well; to achieve a goal or pass a test.

Example

Elle a réussi son examen avec une très bonne note.

Show translation

She passed her exam with a very good grade.

Etymology

From Old French *réussir*, borrowed from Italian *riuscire* ("to come out again, to turn out"), composed of *ri-* (re-) + *uscire* ("to go out"), from Latin *exire* ("to exit"). The sense shifted in French toward "to turn out well" and eventually "to succeed."

Cultural note

In French education culture, *réussir* carries particular weight — *réussir le bac* (passing the baccalauréat exam) is a major life milestone for teenagers. The word can also be used in cooking: *réussir une recette* means to nail a recipe, showing the word's versatility beyond academic contexts. Be careful not to confuse it with the English false friend "to rush" — *réussir* is about achievement, not speed.
