French Level 3 verb

se souvenir

/sə su.v(ə).niʁ/

Definition

To remember or recall something from the past.

Example

Je me souviens de notre premier voyage ensemble.

Show translation

I remember our first trip together.

Etymology

From Old French *sovenir*, from Latin *subvenire* ("to come to mind"), composed of *sub-* ("up from below") + *venire* ("to come"). The reflexive form *se souvenir* — literally "to come to oneself" — emerged as the standard construction in French, making memory an experience that arrives *within* the self rather than something actively seized.

Cultural note

French distinguishes carefully between *se souvenir de* (to remember spontaneously, with warmth or vividness) and *se rappeler* (to recall, often more deliberately). Marcel Proust's monumental novel *À la recherche du temps perdu* ("In Search of Lost Time") is essentially an extended meditation on *se souvenir* — famously triggered by a madeleine dipped in tea. The verb carries a slightly more emotional, involuntary flavour than its near-synonym *se rappeler*.
