Show translation
I feel that something is going to change today.
Etymology
From Latin *sentire* ("to perceive, feel"), which also gave English "sense," "sentence," and "sentiment." The Latin root carries the idea of perceiving through the senses — both physical and emotional — a duality that French *sentir* retains perfectly.
Cultural note
French uses *sentir* for two distinct senses that English separates: "to feel" (*je me sens bien* — I feel well) and "to smell" (*ça sent bon* — that smells good). This double duty is a classic trap for English speakers. Note also the reflexive form *se sentir*, which is used specifically for how a person feels internally: *Comment tu te sens?* (How are you feeling?)
