Show translation
It is raining very heavily today.
Etymology
From Persian بارش (bāriš), derived from the verb بارِیدَن (bāridan, "to rain"). Persian borrowed widely into Hindi-Urdu, and weather vocabulary was a natural domain of adoption. The word entered common Hindi usage during the medieval period of Persianate cultural influence in South Asia.
Cultural note
The monsoon (मानसून) season, roughly June–September, is one of the most culturally significant periods in India — celebrated in classical music (the Malhar raag is specifically associated with rain), poetry, and festivals. Saying आज बारिश होगी ("It will rain today") is near-universal small talk during monsoon months. Learners should note that बारिश होना ("rain happens/falls") is the standard construction — Hindi does not say "rain falls" with the verb गिरना in everyday speech.
