Hindi Level 1 verb

बोलना

bolnā

/boːlnaː/

Definition

To speak or to say something out loud to another person.

Example

वह हिंदी बहुत अच्छे से बोलता है।

Show translation

He speaks Hindi very well.

Etymology

From Sanskrit वदन (vadana, "speech, utterance"), via Prakrit and Apabhraṃśa into early Hindi as *bolna*. The root connects to the Proto-Indo-Aryan verbal base *vad-* ("to speak"), cognate with Latin *vox* ("voice") and Greek *epos* ("word").

Cultural note

In Hindi-speaking culture, *bolna* carries social weight beyond mere speech — saying something aloud is often treated as a commitment. The phrase "मुँह से बोलना" (to speak from the mouth) is used for emphasis when someone finally voices a long-held thought. Be careful not to confuse *bolna* (to speak) with *batāna* (बताना, to tell/inform) — a common mix-up for English learners, since English often uses "tell" and "say" interchangeably in contexts where Hindi draws a clear distinction.
