Etymology

From Persian دروازه (darwāza), meaning "door" or "gate." Persian was the prestige language of the Mughal court, and many everyday architectural and household terms in Hindi — including दरवाज़ा — entered the language during that era. The Persian root derives from dar (door, entry) + wāza (open, wide).

Cultural note

In Indian culture, the threshold (दहलीज़, dahlīz) just inside the doorway holds special significance — guests are welcomed warmly at the door, and many households mark the doorframe with religious symbols or a toran (decorative hanging) for auspiciousness. The phrase "दरवाज़ा खुला है" ("the door is open") is commonly used figuratively to mean someone is always welcome.
