Hindi Level 1 verb

लिखना

likhnā

/ˈlɪkʰ.nɑː/

Definition

To write — to form letters, words, or a message on paper or a screen.

Example

वह हर रोज़ अपनी डायरी लिखता है।

Show translation

He writes in his diary every day.

Etymology

From Sanskrit **लिखति** (*likhati*, "he scratches, writes"), from the root **लिख्** (*likh-*), meaning to scratch or engrave — reflecting how early writing was literally scratched onto clay, bark, or stone. Cognate with Greek *λείχω* (leíkhō, "to lick/scrape") through the Proto-Indo-European root *\*reygʷ-* (to scratch).

Cultural note

Literacy (*sāksharatā*, साक्षरता) has been a central concern in modern India, and government campaigns like "Sakshar Bharat" have made **लिखना** and **पढ़ना** (to read) culturally paired verbs — you'll rarely hear one mentioned without the other. In formal Hindi, the compound **लिखना-पढ़ना** functions almost as a single idiom meaning "to be educated."
