Hindi Level 2 verb

मुस्कुराना

muskurānā

/mʊs.kʊ.ɾaː.naː/

Definition

To smile; to show happiness by curving the lips upward.

Example

वह हमेशा सबको देखकर मुस्कुराती है।

Show translation

She always smiles when she sees everyone.

Etymology

Derived from the Arabic root *basama* (بسم, to smile), which entered Persian as *muskurāna* and passed into Hindi/Urdu through centuries of literary and courtly exchange. The causative suffix *-nā* marks it as an infinitive verb in Hindi.

Cultural note

Smiling is a central gesture of warmth and respect in Indian social life. In Hindi poetry (*kavitā*) and Bollywood songs, *muskurānā* is one of the most beloved words — countless film songs and ghazals are built around the image of a beloved's smile. The word feels slightly more lyrical and gentle than the plainer synonym *हँसना* (haṃsnā), which leans more toward laughing out loud.
